Web Appliances??

A while ago, the big buzz in the computer and consumer electronics industries was the possibilities of a wired and interconnected house, along with the possibilities of Internet connected devices. The tale has moved on since then with several net goods being released.

We laughed when they announced the internet enabled fridge. Then it was released by Whirlpool! We also laughed when they talked of net connected Ice-Cream Carts, and then that was done by Enterasys! We still laugh if someone announces any net connected consumer good!

But if you are a systems integrator or a re seller, then you need something that's way out there on the ragged edge of sanity. Something that is so cool, hip and funky that everyone will want to buy it!

IBM has announced, in conjunction with Carrier, the very first net enable air-conditioners. Yep that's right! Those cool dudes at IBM & Carrier have developed the air-conditioners for the European market.

You can keep in touch with the system through a web site at MyAppliance.com, and you will be able to turn it on or off, and adjust the temperature. And, if you air con is not feeling well it can send you an e-mail or an SMS to your mobile phone! Why it just doesn't ring the mechanic for you is beyond me!

So next time you are working back late, or sweltering at a party, just think how lovely it would be to return home to the perfectly controlled and comfortable environment. Keep your passwords secure, cause you never know just what those cyber space demons will try to do if they can actually cause some damage to real world property. Maybe they will burn the house down, or maybe just freeze the cat!
